Located in the historic downtown district of Orient, New York, this project for an addition to an existing wood-frame house provides the owner - a Los Angeles based artist - an enlarged summer house for her growing family.
The addition aims to refocus the center of the house around spaces for gathering while simultaneously providing a private space for a new master suite. An enlarged stair and a new breakfast room open the existing living spaces to a new, expansive screened porch that connects the interior to an intimate garden in the rear of the house. On the upper level, the master bedroom suite 'floats' over and past the screened porch and, through a narrow, full-height window, provides a private view of the backyard and the adjacent protected farmland to the south.
